A fiscal year is a 12-month period an organization uses for budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting. It does not have to match the January-to-December calendar year.
The U.S. federal fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30 and is named for the calendar year in which it ends. For example, FY2026 runs from October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2026.
The National Retail Federation's 4-5-4 calendar begins in early February (around February 1) and ends the following late January. It is commonly named for the calendar year in which it begins.
Most U.S. school districts use a fiscal year that runs July 1 to June 30, aligned with the academic year, and named for the calendar year in which it ends.
The UK government financial year runs from April 1 to March 31 and is written as a two-year span, for example 2026/27. Canada, India, and Japan also use an April-to-March fiscal year.
Each fiscal year is divided into four three-month quarters (Q1 through Q4) starting from the first month of that fiscal year, so quarter dates differ between the calendar year, government, retail, and school calendars.
